At what age and how, did you get introduced to the sport of Lacrosse?

I was introduced to lacrosse at 9 years old when My family moved from Montreal to Orangeville, where lacrosse is very popular.

What is your current stick setup?

(Head, mesh, shaft, pocket/tape placement etc.)

I use a triumph head and handle. Typically use 6 diamond mesh, with a high pocket, short mesh, and just use a little tape at the end of my handle.

What advice would you give to players wanting to become a dominant

Sounds counter intuitive for a defensemen, but I think stick skills will help separate you-- Being able to pick up ground balls, contribute in transition, create pressure on the ball. All while being sound and responsible positionally. Having the stick in your hand as much as possible, then making a commitment to getting stronger and more agile.

Can you tell us a little bit about the, Hill Academy and how you were introduced to the coaching position?

My father founded The Hill 10 years ago, which was the same time I graduated from Georgetown, so the timing was perfect. It has really been a dream job for me, getting to work in such a positive environment with high level student athletes that are really committed to doing well.

How different is your work out regimen, "In season", vs. off season?

In season you definitely have to be more aware of recovery time and making sure you are working towards peaking for game time. It is typically a weekly progression. In the off season I find myself trying different things and really pushing to build the foundation for the season. You try and make your big gains in the offseason, then maintain that level throughout the season.

What do college coaches look for when recruiting a defenseman?

presence on the field--How you play with your teammates, your communication, and game IQ. Then obviously you need to be able to make an impact and create plays for your team. I think an underrated aspect of defense is "off ball" play. Owning your match up off ball, but also being in a position to support the ball and time your slides correctly.

What kind of pocket do you think is best for a defenseman?

I always recommend a high pocket which makes it easier to pick up ground balls

You have achieved so much throughout your career, can you share some of the most memorable moments?

Winning the Gold Medal in 2014 was very memorable especially after losing my two close friends and former national team teammates Kyle Miller and Chris Sanderson.

What's the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Everyday is a holiday, every meal is a banquet!-Coach Urick. Basically reminded us to approach every day with a positive, enthusiastic attitude.

Did you ever doubt that you would be in the position that you are today (playing Pro)?

I began to think that playing in the NLL was a realistic sometime in junior lacrosse. I didn't really think playing in the MLL would be possible until my senior year. I was a very late bloomer.

Share something most do not, or would be surprised to know, about Brodie Merrill?

Three things that I'm most proud of--my kids. My 4 year old daughter Sawyer and 1 year old twin boys Wyaty and Henry.
