Lets learn more about Chris Mattes
What is your weapon on choice & why?
I started the season using a Warrior Noz X. I finished the season using the new STX Duel and loved it. Thankfully it didn't get too warped for me through the MLL caliber faceoffs
Growing up, were you a. "multi sport athlete", or did you strictly focus on lacrosse?
Growing up I played anything and everything I could. I was never inside the house. In high school I was a soccer and lacrosse player. I ended my soccer career in high school as an All State defenseman who also played forward when the team needed.
Will the" flow" make an appearance next season?
You never know...I get mixed reviews. I know a lot of the Florida fans wanted it back. I think it may have been a one time deal for me though.
What is the hardest part of being a FOGO in the MLL?
Gurenlian. He is hands down the best in my eyes to have ever faced off.
What made you choose being a Face Off Specialist over other positions?
In high school I was an all around midfielder. When I got to college I saw it as an opportunity to get on the field right away because that is what we needed. I focused on becoming the best I could be at that position and it worked out for me.
What is your favorite Face Off drill?
The screw drill...it works on everything. Technique, conditioning, and footwork. Not to mention it is the most realistic at the top level because it gets you better at being in those hard fought scrums.
What is the reason/purpose for, having big tape rings at the top of your stick?
No real reason behind it besides I like the way it feels in my hands and the way I can grip it
Any conditioning tips that you feel give you an edge?
Lift correctly...make sure when you are lifting you are doing it with the correct mechanics.
Most importantly as well...make sure to play other sports as well. I love at my age and career to play pick up soccer, basketball, and even Spikeball (which has became a Florida Launch team favorite)
At what age did you first pick up a Lacrosse Stick?
3rd grade...I played baseball/t-ball up until that and it was way too slow for me. I was then introduced to lacrosse and couldn't put the stick down ever since.
Who has been your biggest supporter?
My family...they don't miss again whether they are there or watching it on TV. Always the first ones to text/call before and after games
Are there any particular meals that you tend to eat on game day?
I try and keep it on the lighter side. We usually have all day to relax before games so when we are home we have a ritual of going to a deli called Laspadas and grabbing a sandwich there and then heading across the street to a juice bar and getting a drink from there for when I wake up from my pre game nap
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I have received a lot of advice through my days playing but I would have to say a good one for athletes is to have the "next play" mentality. Meaning whether you have a great play or a bad play always think, next play. Too many times people let one play dictate the type of game they will have instead of realizing it is a long game.
What are your personal goals for the 2016 season?
I have a couple...I would love to stay with Florida. I love the team we ended the season with along with the coaching staff and support system there. I would definitely want to make the All Star Game which would be a first for me. Finally just like anyone else in the league I want to win a Championship.
What area did you grow up in?
Westfield, NJ
How much do you love Jerry Ragonese - "J.Ragonese"
I love Jerry to the moon and back
